Good evening Glades family,
I want to start by sharing that I hope everyone in our community continues to be safe, in good spirits, and connecting with our loved ones during these unprecedented times. As we move closer to launching online learning, our teachers have been working diligently to prepare their classes on Canvas so that our students can continue to have enriching learning experiences. Furthermore, we continue to work on creating an online structure that will afford parents and students flexibility, while also fostering a routine for learning.

Please see the attached document that will help to provide further guidance regarding how your child will log on to their classes and interact with their teachers. You will notice that teachers will have daily virtual office hours in three hour blocks. During these office hours, teachers will be available via email/other platforms to provide assistance to your child as assignments will be posted daily. Maximum flexibility is created by providing different ranges of time where teachers from various departments will be available to assist you or your child with their learning. If you need assistance with Canvas, please contact the Innovative Learning Department at 754-321-2620. You can also access a plethora of resources at: https://www.browardschools.com/learningnevercloses

If you were unable to attend our first device distribution day, I am happy to announce that the district will be scheduling a second device distribution day in the near future. I will keep everyone informed as more information becomes available.

As a reminder, all District offices are CLOSED for Spring Break, March 23 – 27. The District will also resume the distribution of breakfast and lunch on Monday, March 30. When locations and times are announced, you will be able to find all the details at browardschools.com/coronavirus.

That is all for now.  More information will be forthcoming throughout the week regarding how we will approach online learning. If you have any questions, concerns, or need any clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email at Ricardo.Santana@browardschools.com

Good Evening and Happy Friday!

This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection. As we close out our first full week of the school year, I want to start the Cougar Connection by sharing our vision for the 2019.20 school year! This year, as a school community we are focusing on creating a culture of engagement. Specifically, we are looking to accomplish this by providing high quality, relevant, and compelling classroom experiences for all of our students. This week, my classroom visitations revealed that we are well on our way to actualizing this vision. From project based learning to co-teaching initiatives, I was very pleased to see our teachers thinking outside of the box in an effort to instill a love of learning in our students.

In operational news, this week students had the opportunity to take their fall picture, which will be used for their school IDs. Please note that students should have their updated ID pictures within the next 2 weeks. If this timeline changes, we will make sure to communicate this to our community. It is important to remind your child to always wear their school issued ID when coming to school. Safety and security is of the upmost importance as we continue to move full steam ahead into the new school year.

In district news, the Code of Student Conduct Handbook Goes Green! Parents are invited to review the Code of Student Conduct Handbook and complete the required forms by accessing the Back to School Forms link found on our website.
Also, we will be having our annual Open House event for all students on Thursday, August 29th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
This event is an opportunity for you to learn about your child's curriculum and daily activities.  Please be on the lookout for an Open House letter that will be sent home with your child on Monday, August 26th. Looking forward to meeting you and your family in Cougar Country!

I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Mrs. Valerie Crawford and our coding students. Agust 16, 2019

Good evening and Happy Friday,
This is Mr. Santana, principal of Glades Middle School with your weekly Cougar Connection. My beloved Glades community, we did it! With three days under our belt, I am very pleased to announce that our opening week was very smooth as we kicked off our school year. If you are new to the Glades family, the Cougar Connection is a weekly update that provides a synopsis of the “week that was,” as well as important information about upcoming events. Without further ado, here is this week’s Cougar Connection.

In school operational news, this school year we have fortified our single point of entry through the implementation of a controlled access buzzer system to gain entry to our school. Thanks to our amazing PTSA, this system was recently installed in an effort to increase the safety and security of our precious students and staff. When arriving to the front office, please press the button on the control access unit and one of our staff members will greet you remotely to gain entry. While I do understand this extra layer of security may present somewhat of an inconvenience, please know that the safety and security of all of our students is a critical priority for me as the principal of our school. In other security news, please note that students in 7th and 8th grade will be receiving their IDs on Monday, August 19th. 6th grade students will be receiving temporary IDs on Monday as well. Student pictures are slated to take place from August 21st - 23rd. Information went home with your child today if you are interested in purchasing picture packages.

In academic news this week, I had the opportunity to visit every classroom on our campus and was instantly reminded of what makes Glades such a special place; our wonderful instructional staff and students. Our teachers welcomed our students with care, warmth, and have already begun the process of introducing high quality lessons for our students. In other academic news, please note that due to a significant increase in student enrollment, schedule changes will be initially prioritized for students who are placed in a course without having met the prerequisites or to ensure compliance with state mandated class size limits. All other schedule change requests will be examined and carefully considered once the aforementioned priorities are addressed. As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we want to ensure that all students are appropriately placed in their respective classes.

Finally, in athletic news soccer season is on the way! If your child is interested in trying out for our interscholastic soccer teams, there will be an interest meeting held on Tuesday, August 19th at 9:00 AM in room 328. This meeting applies to both the girls and boys soccer teams.

In closing, I want to thank you for the critical role you continue to play in our school's success. Good evening Glades Community,

On behalf of our school, I want to thank the Glades community for your sincere well-wishes and outpouring of kindness and support. In an effort to honor Ms. Lieber's memory and provide an opportunity to celebrate what she means to all of us as a community, we will be having a remembrance event here at Glades on Friday, 10/26 from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM in our cafeteria. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. If you are interested in providing a card and/or any form of donation to the family, there will be a table set up for you to be able to do so. Furthermore, if you have any new or gently used books, we will also have collection boxes available for a book drive we are conducting on Ms. Lieber's behalf.

Please know that this event is open to our community including parents, students, and any former students that wish to participate. Due to the huge outpouring of love and support, we will not be able to accommodate everyone speaking at this event, however, we have devised a way to ensure that anyone who would like to share their thoughts/memories will be able to do so via written communication that will be memorialized permanently.

In closing, I want to once again, express my gratitude for all of your kindness and support during this difficult time. We look forward to having the opportunity to come together and celebrate the life of one of our Glades Middle family members. Good evening and Happy Friday!

This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection. As we close out another positive week at Glades, I continue to be excited in seeing the great work happening in our classrooms. This week, I had the opportunity to not only visit every classroom but also meet with grade level curriculum groups and dissect our student achievement data. With our keen focus on engaging all learners, new structures have been created this year to monitor the progress of every student.

In community news this week, I had the pleasure of meeting with faculty, staff, and community members at our first School Advisory Council (SAC) and School Advisory Forum (SAF) meetings. We were able to discuss upcoming initiatives, school protocols, and also curriculum. Please come out and join us at our next SAC and SAF meetings on Thursday, October 25th at 4:15 pm in the media center. These meetings provide an excellent venue for you to provide valuable input into the functions of our school.

In school-related news, this week we had the distinct honor of hosting the County Middle School Debate Tournament. We had an amazing turnout of 605 students from various schools that competed. Under the leadership of Mrs. McMahon, the Glades team was able to bring home 11 medals! Congratulations to Dillon Powell as he ranked 3rd overall in Congressional Debate and Alyssa Allen as she ranked 2nd overall in Dramatic Interpretation. All in all, a very successful tournament!

In staff recognition news, our favorite School Resource Officer (SRO) Officer Wright is being featured by Miramar Police in a community service video highlighting the role of the SRO in public schools. We appreciate his service in keeping us safe!

In student activities news, our first dance of the year is being hosted by PTA this evening. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with their friends and take a well-deserved break from school. Please know that law enforcement and security personnel will be on hand to ensure the safety of our students. In additional student activities news, we are continuing to implement the pillar of promoting a positive school culture by participating in the Statewide Kindness Challenge! Under the leadership of Mrs. Moser, the Great Kindness Challenge (GKC) is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The students will participate in 4 lessons that focus on teaching kindness. Additionally, our peer counselors will also conduct a school-wide kindness challenge.

Finally, in athletic news, Randy Smith has done it again with another win at the Cross Country meet this past week. Cross Country Championships will be held next Thursday at Markham Park. We wish our teams the best as they look to soar to unprecedented heights. Also, our first home basketball game will be on Monday, October 15th. This is a reminder that students must have their ID on to enter and tickets are $2 for students and $3 for adults. Come out and support our Glades Teams!

Good evening and Happy Friday!

This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection. As we close out another great week at Glades, it's hard to believe we are already at the midpoint of the first quarter. Our focus continues to center on "reimagining" Glades Middle School through implementing our 5 pillars of success. This was evidenced by this week's classroom visits which demonstrated a clear focus on our shift into deeper learning. There were various examples throughout the week, however, I have to say Mrs. Riley's World History class really stood out. Students were treated to an excellent example of project-based learning through engaging learning stations that included a mock cave exploration within the classroom.

In safety and security news, please note that all students have now received their updated IDs. Students that were unable to take pictures for the first round of IDs will have an opportunity to take pictures on September 25th. Students without pictures will continue to use a temporary ID.

In community news, be on the lookout for interim reports that will be distributed next week Monday, September 17th. This is an important monitoring tool that can be used to better gauge your child’s academic progress this school year. In additional community news, next week we will be having a Cougar Family night at Texas Roadhouse on Monday, September 18th between 4 pm and 10 pm. A percentage of the sales will be donated directly to Glades Middle School. Please be sure to mention that you are there for the Glades Family Night in order for us to receive a donation. Your support is greatly appreciated!

In student activities news, kudos to our Robotics teams as they had an opportunity to visit the Kennedy Space Center this past weekend. During their visit, students were able to learn about long-term space exploration and the challenges that engineers face on a daily basis. Thank you to Mrs. Farkas and Ms. Bartlett for organizing this incredible experience for our students. This is an excellent example of shifting into deeper learning!

In teacher recognition news, please join me in congratulating our Teacher of the Month, Ms. Ellison! In the spirit of promoting a positive school culture, we want to recognize Ms. Ellison for her heart in serving our students. I would also like to take the time to recognize Mrs. Van Valkenburg and our Glades Middle School Honor Choir. Under the leadership of Mrs. VanValkenburg, our choir has been selected by Disney Performing Arts to be part of the entertainment at the WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort! They will be performing Saturday, January 26th and Sunday, January 27th at Disney World.

In athletic news, CONGRATULATIONS to the boys and girls soccer teams for their victories against New Renaissance on Wednesday. Both teams excelled and displayed great sportsmanship. In addition, cheerleading camp and tryouts will begin next week for all interested students. There will be two days of camp on September 17th and 18th from 4:15 pm to 5:15 pm and tryouts will be on September 20th from 4:15 pm to 5:30 pm.

In closing, I wish everyone a fantastic weekend! Remember to follow us on Twitter @Glades_MS to stay informed about all of the latest happenings at our school. The Future is always BRIGHT at Glades! Let’s continue to Reimagine our school with Pride, Passion, and Purpose!

Good evening and Happy Friday!

This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection! Before beginning with this week’s Cougar Connection, I wanted to take the time to ensure everyone is informed regarding the nature of a power outage that occurred this afternoon. We were advised by FPL that an area-wide outage occurred causing us to lose power in the school including phone, P.A. system, Wi-Fi etc. We immediately initiated our power outage contingency protocols and were able to communicate to our staff and community during and after the event. Thankfully, power was able to be restored in a timely fashion and our students and staff responded well and were able to resume our day. If you have any questions regarding today’s outage, please feel free to contact me.

In community engagement news this week, our amazing PTA hosted their first General Meeting and Volunteer Orientation for our parents here at Glades and it was a full house! A big thank you to our Cougar Community for showing up and supporting our school initiatives. Please know that your support is welcomed and encouraged with open arms. If you were unable to attend and are interested in volunteering, please contact our school so that we may connect you with our volunteer coordinator.

In safety and security news, Extra Help Thursdays are back! Due to our newly implemented safety protocols, the procedures for Extra Help Thursday have been modified. We will open the building from 8:30 am to 8:35 am for students interested in participating to report to their teachers' classroom. Please note that during this time, we will supervise their entry. At 8:35 am, all of our buildings will be secured and students will not be able to enter after that point until we release for the start of the school day. In the spirit of operational excellence, we want to make sure that students continue to have extended learning opportunities, but also that students are safe within our school.

In student activities news, our Peer Counselors continued to foster school spirit this week by decorating Starbucks coffee sleeves for Peace Week. These coffee sleeves will actually be featured in our neighborhood Starbucks. Be on the lookout for our students’ amazing artwork. Speaking of Art, applications for Art Club are now available on our website and are due to Ms. Romero by September 11th. We also have the Girls Who Code Club and Chess Club that will be in effect next week. Students interested in attending these clubs can go to Student Services located in front of the Media Center for more information.

In athletic news, this past week the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams defeated Imagine Weston and gave it their all against Tequesta Trace but came up just a bit short in the end. Next week, they will be playing at home against New Renaissance on Wednesday and Bair Middle on Friday. Come out and support our Cougars as we set our sights on a playoff berth. Finally, this week we also held an interest meeting for anyone interested in participating in Basketball this upcoming season. If your child was unable to attend this week’s meeting and is interested in participating, please contact Mr. Craig Lindo for Boys Basketball or Mr. Travis Jenkins for Girls Basketball.

In closing, I wish everyone a great extended weekend! Remember to follow us on Twitter @Glades_MS to stay informed about all the latest happenings at our school. As a reminder, our vision this year is to “Re-imagine” Glades Middle School through Operational Excellence, Shifting Into Deeper Learning, Promoting a Positive School Culture, Engaging All Learners, and Cultivating Leadership! Good evening and Happy Friday!

This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection. As we close out this week and head into an extended weekend, I want to start by thanking all stakeholders for helping us start the year in a positive fashion. Through the implementation of our five pillars of success, we have been able to set a tone of excellence on our campus in every facet.

In community engagement news, this week we had the pleasure of hosting our new and returning Cougar Families at our annual Open House event. We hope you found Open House to be informative and also that you had an opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers. In an effort to foster continuous improvement, we have put together an Open House survey that will afford you the opportunity to share your perspectives on the Glades Middle School Open House experience. The survey is available on our website and will be open until September 30, 2018.

In safety and security news, as a reminder, all students are required to wear identification badges. Also, please be advised that our campus must be cleared every day by 4:30 PM as there is no supervision provided after this time. Please assist us in keeping our campus safe by ensuring your child is picked up by 4:30 PM. Please note that we have an aftercare program available for families that provides structured supervision until 6:00 PM. Your support is greatly appreciated as we make student safety a priority.

In school news, Extra Help Thursday will be starting next week on September 6th for all students and will run from 8:35 AM – 9:00 AM. This is a great opportunity for students to receive individualized assistance from their teachers. Due to increased safety and security protocols, students arriving after 8:35 AM will not be permitted to attend extra help sessions. In addition, be on the lookout for our Art Club! Applications for Art Club are available on our website and are due to Ms. Romero by September 11th. Also, Glades with the assistance of Everglades Community Church will be starting a Community Closet to serve our families. We are asking for polo shirts in school colors (white, hunter green, black, and navy blue) and shorts and/or pants (jean or khaki) in sizes that will meet the needs of middle school children. Please assist us in building our Community Closet. Your donations are greatly appreciated!

In student activities news, our Peer Counselors are getting ready to make an impact on campus! Under the leadership of Mrs. Moser, they will be meeting with students in our exceptional student education program and build relationships through various social activities planned throughout the year. Also, Peer Counselors are teaming up with our Reading teachers and will be supporting students through our peer tutoring initiative. A big thank you to Mrs. Moser, Ms. Vega, and the Exceptional Student Learning Support department for spearheading these initiatives.

In athletic news, boys and girls soccer will begin with two away games next week against Imagine Weston and Tequesta Trace. We wish them the best as they kick off the soccer season for this school year. In addition, Cross-country tryouts will start next week Wednesday at 4:00 pm in the backfield. Please note that students must submit a completed School Entry Health Form in order to participate. Forms are available on the Glades website.

Good evening and Happy Friday!

This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection. As we close out this second week of school, I would like to recognize how amazing students have been during this transitional period as we head full steam into the new school year. I have had the opportunity to visit every classroom multiple times and have been impressed with how our teachers are implementing our 5 pillars of success! Again, operational excellence, engaging all learners, cultivating leadership, promoting a positive school culture, and shifting into deeper learning represent the foundation of our vision to "re-imagine Glades Middle School this year.

With respect to operational excellence this week, we have now completed our final phase of scheduling and are excited to see students engaged in their schooling as they build relationships with peers, teachers, and staff. In addition, our adjustment in staggering 6th-grade dismissal has led to a reduction of 12 minutes in clearing our afternoon car loop. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continue to evaluate and assess every aspect of our operations. Our goal is to optimize how we structure our school in an effort to create a fantastic experience for students and families.

In safety and security news, students are doing a great job wearing their ID’s and coming to school in their Unified Dress. If your child did not receive an ID, please have them see Mr. Kocis, our social and emotional learning coordinator, for a temporary ID until we receive their official ID from the "Life Touch" picture company. Also, I would like to clarify the Cougar Unified Dress Policy. Students are allowed to wear jackets with hoods but the jacket must have a zipper. The purpose of this policy is to avoid any obstruction towards staff being able to visibly see student IDs. Thank you again for your assistance in supporting the unified dress policy. Our primary aim is to ensure that we are able to readily identify students on our campus.

In community engagement news, we will be having our annual Open House event for all students on Thursday, August 30th from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm. This event is an opportunity for you to learn about your child's curriculum and daily activities. Please be on the lookout for an Open House letter that will be sent home with your child on Tuesday, August 28th. Looking forward to meeting you and your family in Cougar Country!

In staff recognition news, please join me in recognizing our very own Ms. Gladys Vega for being selected to represent Broward County as the Florida Secondary Literacy Coach of the Year! Words cannot express how unbelievably excited and proud I am of her receiving this honor. Ms. Vega has been and continues to be an integral part of the successes here at Glades Middle School. Congratulations!

In student activities news, Chess Club will be hosting their first meeting on Monday, August 27th in room 255 from 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm. Also, Girls Who Code is having their first meeting on Wednesday, August 29th in room 327 at 8:30 am. Please come out and participate in both of these amazing activities. Everyone is welcome!

Finally, in the athletic news, boys and girls soccer tryouts are continuing next week as we draw closer to the start of the soccer season. The lists of students that will be moving on to the next phase of tryouts will be posted in the Cafeteria. Parents interested in attending tryouts are absolutely welcome. Make sure to check in our front office to receive the appropriate credentials to attend. Also, cross country tryouts will begin Wednesday, September 5th for interested students.

Remember to follow us on Twitter @Glades_MS to stay informed about all the latest happenings at our school. The Future Continues to be Bright at Glades! Let's Re-Imagine Glades Middle School with Pride, Passion, and Purpose. Have a great weekend!
