This is Mr. Santana, Principal of Glades Middle School, with your weekly Cougar Connection. As we close out what was truly a fantastic week at Glades, I want to thank you, our Glades community for all of your support and engagement with us this week. This week, we had the pleasure of hosting our new and returning Cougar families at our annual Open House event. The event was a huge success and we want to continue to improve our practices as we reimagine Glades. Therefore, we have put together an Open House survey that allows you the chance to offer your insights and feedback. Please take a few minutes and share with us your perspective on the Glades Middle School Open House by going to our website and completing the survey. The survey will be open until September 22, 2022. Thank you for your time, and we look forward to partnering with you this school year!

In safety and security news, I would like to commend our students for wearing their IDs and arriving to school every day in alignment with our unified dress code. Students have really shown their Pride, Passion, and Purpose by upholding their Glades responsibilities. As a reminder, it is important to remind your child to always wear their school issued ID and arrive to school in unified dress. If an ID or lanyard is lost, students receive a temporary I.D. free of charge, however, a permanent new I.D. is $5 to replace. If your child is in need of a lanyard only, one can be purchased here at the school for $2. As a reminder, unified dress includes black, white, green or blue polos; jean or khaki bottoms including shorts and skirts that are fingertip length with no rips or tears above the knee; and closed toed shoes (no crocs or slides). Additionally, students may wear hoodies with a zipper so that we can readily identify students in the event of an emergency. Safety and security is of the upmost importance as we continue to move full steam ahead into the new school year. Go Cougars!

In school news, we will be having our first School Advisory Council meeting (SAC) meeting on Wednesday, September 7th at 4:15 pm in room 329. Our SAC is a critical venue for engaging with our school improvement plan, providing feedback to help improve our practices and also to stay informed about all of the latest happenings at our school. Your feedback and input are not only welcome, but needed as we want to ensure that we are providing an excellent service and experience for our students.  Everyone is welcome to attend SAC!

In student assessment news, please be advised that this year, all schools are administering new standardized assessments in grades 6-8 in Language Arts and Math. Designed to measure student growth as the year progresses, students will take their baseline assessment in September and their second progress monitoring assessment in December. The final assessment will be administered in May and will be utilized for school accountability purposes. Our testing calendar has been attached to this correspondence for your review. You will notice that during the week of 09/12 – 09/16, all of our students will be taking their baseline assessments. Dubbed "Cougar baseline week," we are calling on our community to reinforce to our students the importance of doing their absolute best on this first round of assessments so that we can tailor our instruction accordingly. We will be discussing our new assessments next week Wednesday at our SAC meeting!

In cafeteria news, per district policy, please keep in mind that students are not permitted to have food delivered to the school from outside businesses. This also includes parents/guardians purchasing food from outside businesses and dropping it off in the front office for their child to eat during lunch.

Finally, in athletics news, we will be having our first boys and girls soccer game on Wednesday, September 7th starting at 4:15 pm for girls and 5:15 pm for boys here at Glades. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students. All tickets must be purchased through the Gofan app. This is a friendly reminder that all spectators must follow the approved district bag policy (attached to this correspondence). Large bags and book bags are NOT permitted inside athletic events. Only clear bags or small handbags no larger than 12” x 12” are permitted. Please go to our school website for more information and specific information for bag types. This will be enforced at all sports events.

The Future Continues to be BRIGHT at Glades! Remember to follow us on Twitter @Glades_MS to stay informed about all of the latest happenings at our school. Mindset Matters! Let's continue moving our school forward with Pride, Passion and Purpose! I wish you a fantastic extended weekend.

Sincerely,
